At the southern end of Rock Beach, on Goubert Avenue, stands the statue of Joseph François Dupleix, Governor-General of French India and rival of Robert Clive.

History

France recognised Dupleix’s work only in 1870, when two statues of him were commissioned, one for Puducherry and one for France. The Puducherry statue was first installed on 16 July 1870, in the middle of what is now Bharathi Park.

In 1979 it was moved to its present place by the beach. The Public Works Department of the Government of Puducherry restored it in 2014.

What to see

  • Dupleix in court dress, with a bag wig and long riding boots
  • The plan of Puducherry in his right hand; his left hand rests on the hilt of his sword
  • Dupleix Park, at the southern end of the Promenade
